Many patients with corneal disease can be sucessfully treated with medicines, contact lenses and laser. Other patients require surgery including partial or full replacement of the cornea with tissue gifted by organ donors.
Dr McKellar is a corneal specialist. He uses medications and surgery to repair diseased and damaged corneas.
Dr McKellar jointly develop the allogeneic serum eye drop programme in New Zealand. He performs full thickness and lamellar corneal transplants and was the the second surgeon to perform an endothelial transplant (DSAEK) in New Zealand.
Corneal surgery is usually performed as a day stay operation using local anaesthesia.
