Pterygium is common condition in which the surface of the eye damaged by ultraviolet light and responds by forming a fibrovascular 'callus'.

Most pterygia are unsightly and become red and irritated from time to time. Some become so large that they threaten vision.

Dr McKellar is a pterygium specialist who has been perfoming pterygium surgery for over 20 years. He uses medications and surgery to improve the appearance and comfort of eyes with pterygia and eliminate the risk of vision loss.

While pterygia are easy to remove the secret to preventing recurrence and scarring is to place a graft of conjunctiva over the excision site. The graft is sewn or glued in place. Anti-inflammatory drops are then used for many months. Some patients also require special anti-scarring agents.

Pterygium surgery is usually performed as a day stay operation using topical or local anaesthesia.
