Barb is a registered nurse. She joined the team in 2001 and has completed a year long distance learning certificate to qualify as an ophthalmic assistant. Barb is currently studying for her Masters of Nursing degree.
After Paula, Barb is the first person patients see when they come to the practice. She reviews all patients immediately prior to their appointment with Dr McKellar. Barb's role is to assess referral letters and patient's notes and determine what additional information Dr McKellar will require when he meets with the patient.
Barb tests all patient's vision at each visit and in most cases will also check the eye pressure and dilate the pupils. Other tests such as colour vision and peripheral vision testing may also be performed.
Barb has a very good knowledge of eye disease. She teaches general practice nurses how to manage eye diseases and is a key participant in patient education at the rooms.
